Autolux

Autolux (Carla Azar: vocals/drums, Greg Edwards: vocals/guitar. and Eugene Goreshter: vocals/bass) produced Transit Transit themselves with Edwards serving as engineer. It was recorded in the band’s studio, Space 23, located near downtown Los Angeles. The album begins with it’s title track, an utterly unique concussion of rhythm, created from a looped sample of an old freezer slamming shut and a simple round of chords from an upright piano. The hypnotic density of the vocals and organic futurism of the instrumentation instantly rearranges any preconceptions about the ‘autolux sound’. “Census” and “Supertoys” play like the logical evolution and refinement of Future Perfect, delivering propulsive grooves and atmospheric chord changes, while “Highchair” combines a simple, yet effective drum machine beat with tympani-esque tom overdubs to create an orchestral lo-fi dance track. There is a notable sonic progression throughout Transit Transit: vintage synthesizers and manipulated ambience glue central song components together, several tracks are built around piano, all three members take turns with lead vocals, harmonies are abundant, and there is even a bit of trumpet. Ultimately, Transit Transit is propelled by its individual members’ strengths, coalescing into beautiful, complex songs. Goreshter continues to innovate his bass style, effortlessly modernizing the instrument’s melodic role, while still providing an on-edge rawness and groove-filled momentum. Edwards’ guitars serve to modulate the moods throughout the record, constantly evoking feelings found in the space between emotions. And Azar’s sturdy, creative drumming (a phenomenon to behold on stage) continues on record with plenty of hook beats – ferocious and delicate, at once.

Halsted “Life Underwater”

Life Underwater was recorded in an old Victorian House in San Francisco during the rainy season of this past winter. “Most reels of tape have higher price tags than our budget for this album, yet I consider it the most dynamic, sweeping and ambitious record I’ve ever made” says Halsted’s singer/songwriter and bandleader Ryan Auffenberg.

After years of songwriting, touring and a self-released EP or two, Auffenberg’s debut album “Marigolds” was released in 2008 on Evangeline Records. It received nation-wide accolades in the press and college radio, and one song was even featured on the season premiere of ABC’s medical drama “Private Practice”. But rather than follow up the success of “Marigolds” with yet another singer/songwriter effort, Ryan was eager to break new musical ground.

Halsted’s Life Underwater weaves a masterful patchwork of musical textures, ranging from wide-eyed, anthemic bombast to hushed, plaintive intimacy. It is a love letter to the passion that draws one to make music; the feeling of standing in the crowd or listening to a record in your room, hoping one day to channel a glimmer of the magic someone else’s songs have made you feel. Or as Auffenberg simply states, “We hope it makes you wanna drive just a little bit faster”.

The Canon Logic

If you think the last thing the world needs right now is another rock band then you clearly haven’t heard The Canon Logic. After steadfastly perfecting their sound for the past few years this quintet from Brooklyn via Philadelphia were finally ready to unleash their debut full-length FM Arcade this past March. An album that sees the band finally fully realizing their unique sound for the masses to hear. Although the roots of the band began when these musicians were students at the University Of Delaware, the act didn’t solidify their line-up until frontman Tim Kiely, bassist Sean Enright and guitarists Josh Greenfield and Mark Alu hooked up with drummer Michael Mignano in 2006—and once that chemistry was ignited the group quickly released a handful of EPs and landed spots on the Vans Warped Tour, The Music Inspires Health Tour, CurrentTV, Fearless TV and the CMJ Music Marathon among others.
